India’s coal production climbs to 664.37 MT, up 12.29% YoY, boosting power sector supply: Coal ministry, ET EnergyWorld


New Delhi: India’s coal production for the fiscal year 2023-24 up to December 25 has reached 664.37 million tonnes (MT), the ministry of coal reported, marking a 12.29% increase compared to the same period last year, which saw 591.64 MT.

In terms of coal dispatch, the ministry noted a cumulative achievement of 692.84 MT for the same period, reflecting an 11.32% growth over the previous year’s figure of 622.40 MT. This surge in coal dispatch is significant for meeting the energy needs of the country’s power sector.

The data further said that coal dispatch to the power sector has increased by 8.39%, totaling 577.11 MT, up from 532.43MT in the corresponding period of the previous year.

As of December 25, 2023, the overall coal stock, which includes stock at mines, thermal power plants (DCB), and in transit, was reported at 91.05 MT. This figure is a 21.57% increase from the 74.90 MT recorded on the same date in 2022.

Additionally, the Pithead Coal Stock at Coal India Limited (CIL) on December 25, 2023, stands at 47.29 MT, a 53.02% rise from 30.88 MT on December 25, 2022.

The ministry of coal’s report highlights the consistent and robust coal supply chain in the country, ensuring ample coal availability to meet the growing energy demand. The effective stock management strategies and operational efficiency are reflected in the higher coal stock positions and the smooth evacuation process facilitated by the uninterrupted availability of coal rakes. These efforts contribute to the ministry’s commitment to maintaining a reliable coal supply, supporting the nation’s power sector and furthering the goal of a self-reliant India.
