Ranchi: Union coal secretary Amrit Lal Meena on Tuesday urged Coal India Limited (CIL) and its subsidiaries to lay emphasis on the PSU’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) and explore new areas to provide the benefits of the initiatives.

Lal was virtually addressing the inaugural session of a two-day CSR conference of CIL subsidiaries organised by the PSU’s Ranchi-based subsidiary Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) on Tuesday.

Alongside Meena, CIL chairman Pramod Agarwal also addressed the gathering virtually. Representatives of all CIL subsidiaries are attending the event.

Speaking at the event, noted social reformer Sonam Wangchuk stressed the need to develop CSR policies and initiatives based on the local needs.

“There should be need-based and region-based CSR models which would benefit the locals,” Wangchuk said as he laid out the initiatives taken in Ladakh to bring about social transformation.

Vinay Ranjan, CIL’s director personnel, said the PSU has been taking up CSR initiatives since it was introduced by the Union government in 2014. “Best practices in the industry are being adopted by the CIL and are being put into practice,” Ranjan said.
