Ola gears up to widen e-scooter portfolio for market share gains, ET EnergyWorld

Mumbai: Ola Electric, the e-scooter market leader, is seeking to cement its leadership credentials in India’s electric two-wheeler market with a portfolio of four to five models by the end of the ongoing fiscal.

A recent round of price hikes by manufacturers amid reducing subsidies makes Ola’s scooters most affordable among the top five brands, thecompany said.

Electric two-wheelers make up about 7 per cent of total industry sales, but the share is rising much faster than those for conventional bikes and scooters. Annual sales are nearing about a million units even though the quantum of subsidies is tailing off.

With the launch of the S1 Air in July, which is expected to be priced at ₹1,09,999, the Bhavish Aggarwal-founded firm is now gearing up to reduce price points further. This would be followed by three to four more new models that would aim at straddling multiple price points.

“We are the most affordable brand of e-scooters and will become even more affordable with the S1 Air. Come July, it would help us to grow our sales in multiples,” Anshul Khandelwal, chief marketing and revenue officer, Ola Electric Mobility, told ET.

After the recent price hikes, Ola S1 Pro is priced at ₹1,39,999 while the S1 is priced at ₹1,29,999. Ather Energy’s 450 X is now priced at ₹1,48,672 (ex-showroom, Mumbai) while 450x with Pro Pack (offered as an accessory) ₹1,69,187.

The price range for TVS iQube is now ₹1,66,000 to ₹1,68,000.

Sales of electric two-wheelers in India more than doubled in May from a year ago – topping 100,000 units for the first time – pushed up by customers wanting to avoid the anticipated increase in vehicle prices. As many as 104,771 high-speed electric scooters were registered last month, an increase of 148 per cent over May 2022.
