UK-listed Petrofac has won a lump-sum engineering, procurement and construction contract from the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) for work on a key onshore project in Abu Dhabi.
The company on Monday said that under the new deal, “Petrofac’s asset solutions business will design and install facilities to optimise operations and reduce methane and greenhouse gas emissions at the Habshan Complex, located 150 kilometres southwest of Abu Dhabi”.
While the UK contractor did not disclose the value of the EPC deal, the award is significant as it marks a resumption of activity in its core market of Abu Dhabi.
The company noted that the award follows the September announcement that Petrofac will continue to support Adnoc operations at the Haliba oilfield “with a two-year field maintenance services contract extension”.
Adnoc earlier this year informed Petrofac that it could participate in upcoming new tenders following a 12-month ban that had a strong impact on its workflow in the Middle East.
Petrofac on 15 March 2021 was suspended from taking part in Adnoc tenders after a former executive pleaded guilty to bribery offences involving oil deals in the United Arab Emirates worth more than $3 billion.

The contractor in March said the suspension had been lifted and it has been reinstated in Adnoc’s commercial directory.
Abu Dhabi has been Petrofac’s key market for its engineering and construction division, and the company was badly hit last year as multiple EPC projects slipped out of its hands.
However, the UK-based player is actively participating in multiple EPC tenders in Abu Dhabi and is hoping for a strong comeback in the UAE market.
